Corbett Senior gets Gold at National Academic Decathlon

Justin Much o Statesman Journal o April 28, 2009

MEMPHIS - Corbett High School senior Lara Dunton captured the gold medal in language and literature this past weekend at the U.S. Academic Decathlon National Finals, while her Oregon state championship team finished 27th place overall. Corbett represented Oregon in the competitions after Dunton led the Columbia Gorge contingent to a resounding victory in the Oregon Academic Decathlon state championship in February. At nationals she scored 840 out of a possible 1,000 points on the language & literature objective exam, matching the score of two-time national champion Kris Sankaran from California's Moorpark High School.

"She's proven again and again she has the ability to score right up there with the top dogs," said Oregon's state decathlon director Christian Cerone. "Leading the nation in an event isn't very easy to do, especially in a program as young as Oregon's." Corbett joined state champions from 34 other states, plus a team from London, England, in the two-day competition for the right to be crowned national champion. Sankaran's Moorpark team emerged as the overall victor in the ten-event competition for the second straight year.
Other strong Corbett performances included a fourth place in interview by junior Morgon Purvine, and fifth and sixth-place finishes in math by senior Tyler Jones and junior Jacy Clare, respectively. Jones also placed in the top ten in economics, while Dunton earned top-ten finishes in economics, music, and science to go along with her gold medal.
"The gold medal is the first national award in the two-year history of Oregon Academic Decathlon and only the third medal awarded to an Oregon student at the national competition since its inception in 1981," Cerone noted.

Lara Dunton Gold Medalist at National Event

The Gresham Outlook, Apr 28, 2009, Updated Apr 28, 2009

Corbett High School senior Lara Dunton was awarded the gold medal in the language and literature event of the U.S. Academic Decathlon National finals last weekend in Memphis, Tenn.

The gold medal is the first national award in the two-year history of Oregon Academic Decathlon and only the third medal awarded to an Oregon student at the national competition since it began in 1981.

Dunton scored 840 out of a possible 1,000 points on the language and literature objective exam. This was tops in the field of students participating in her category and matched the score of two-time national champion Kris Sankaran from California's Moorpark High School.

Sankaran holds the record for the highest individual overall score in Academic Decathlon history and earned recognition as the highest scoring student overall in this year's finals. Lara's ability to keep pace with such a strong competitor was not lost on Christian Cerone, Oregon state director.

"She's proven again and again she has the ability to score right up there with the top dogs," Cerone said. "Leading the nation in an event isn't very easy to do, especially in a program as young as Oregon's." Corbett finished in 27th place overall, a step up from their 31st place performance in last year's national competition. Corbett, which represented Oregon, joined teams from 34 other states, plus a team from London, England, in the two-day competition for the right to be crowned national champion.

Other strong performances by Corbett students included a fourth-place finish in interview by junior Morgon Purvine, and fifth- and sixth-place finishes in math by senior Tyler Jones and junior Jacy Clare, respectively.

Jones also placed in the top 10 in economics, and Dunton earned top-10 finishes in economics, music and science to go along with her gold medal.

Seniors Matthew Hammel, William Matheson, and Laura Kimes, junior Brandon Sager and sophomore Sasha LaGreide round out Corbett's nine-member team.

Fall 2008: Key Communicators
U.S. NEWS AND WORLD REPORT RANKS CORBETT 96TH IN NATION

U.S. News and World Report just gave Corbett High School its second TOP 100 national ranking and its second 'Top High School in Oregon' ranking of 2008.

Their rating system is more complex than the one that NEWSWEEK used to rank Corbett 86th in the nation. It includes an analysis of state test results, student performance relative to demographic characteristics, and college preparatory opportunities such as Advanced Placement.

It is another feather in Corbett's hat and a testament to the best staff that I have ever seen assembled in one place.

Congratulations to all involved!

Corbett Students Earn Advanced Placement Honors

The College Board released the names of 17 members of the Corbett High School Class of 2007 who have earned recognition as Advanced Placement Scholars. The "Scholar" designation is reserved for those students who have passed three or more AP exams with a score of 3 or better on a five point scale. The 17 students represented nearly 40% of the graduating class. Lauren Bruene, Spencer Childs, Nicholas Erspamer, Michael Green, Wilhelmina Hayward, Lauren Miller, Jedediah Noles, Kyle Payton, Jessica Scott, Randy Sloan, Jake Soulagnet, Caitlin Spanjer, Mallory Spanjer, and Tiffany Winebarger were among the AP Scholars of the Class of 2007. Andrew Hanes received additional recognition as an AP "Scholar with Honor," and Alex Grey and Samuel Schwartz were designated "Scholar with Distinction." Both additional awards reflect achievement beyond the "Scholar" requirements. Other Corbett students who have earned the status of Advanced Placement Scholar include Gabriel Luna, Ben Luna, and Adam Waldo (Scholar with Honor), members of the Class of 2008, and Lara Dunton, Class of 2009. The 21 Scholars have passed a combined 92 AP exams over the past two years. Corbett High School had the highest Advanced Placement rate of any school in Oregon in 2006, and has since tripled its participation. CSN, November 2007.

Teacher Retires After 29 Years at Corbett
Larry Callahan writes:

After approximately a month of school, it's quite odd (though not horrible!) not being at Corbett High School for the first time in 29 years (32 years total teaching years). I would like to express my sincere thanks to my fellow teachers and other staff members, parents, and most of all, to the hundreds and hundreds and....you get the idea, students who've put up with me since the '79-'80 school year at CHS. For the overwhelming majority of them, it was indeed my pleasure. For those few others, to use a baseball cliche, "You win some, you lose some, and some are rained out." To this day, I continue to have former students, some from two years ago, some from twenty, come up to me to talk, thank me, and occasionally even kind of apologize. I usually kind of laugh this off because they're often much more critical of themselves in the past than I ever thought of or considered. I appreciate each and every one and really enjoy talking to former students, finding out what they are doing, and in some cases, discussing their son or daughter who was recently in my class. I had to leave Corbett before I had any grandchildren as students. I never gave teaching a second thought after I graduated from high school and didn't really decide on it until after leaving the army in 1973. I'm extremely pleased with the decision I made including the one to come to Corbett, and stay. Not the highest paying job in the world, but certainly comfortable and extremely rewarding, I can't think of anything else I would have rather done (since I was ruled out of taking Hank Aaron's place in the outfield for the Braves by age 12).

One of my most personal highlights at CHS was to "graduate" with my son Neal last spring as part of the class of '07...you know...he graduated, I retired (not from life, I might add). Again, thanks so much to everyone who made the past 28 years very enjoyable and I'm sure you'll continue to see me around Corbett in the coming years...so watch out!! CSN, October 2007.

Corbett School District is Recognized

Corbett School District has received considerable attention this past year in the papers and from the education community around the state. Staff members have been honored by the Oregon Middle Level Association (Ms. Luna, Mr. Trani and Mr. Dunton), the Oregon Small Schools Association (which selected Ms. Luna as their Teacher of the Year), and Oregon Confederation of School Administrators (who selected Mr. Trani as the Oregon High School Principal of the Year) and the Oregon Music Educators Association (which selected Mr. Dunton as their Administrator of the Year). The Corbett School District, meanwhile, selected Mr. Derek Jaques as its own Cowling Family Golden Apple award winner for outstanding teaching.

The Corbett High School Band took First in State for the first time, and Corbett High School was recognized by Newsweek Magazine as the highest ranked school in Oregon and among the top 1% in the nation in Advanced Placement participation rates. CSN, August/September 2007.

Class of 2007 Sets Records

Corbett's Graduating Class of 2007 set any number of records along the way, including having earned the equivalent of 320 hours of college level credit through Advanced Placement testings during their Corbett years. They set new standards in participation as well as success. 38 of 43 seniors took at least one Advanced Placement exam, and the class passed a total of 87 exams with a score of 3 or higher. They did the same with their efforts at the Scholastic Aptitude Test, in which 79% participated (the state average is about 50%) and their average score of 1084 is about 30 points above the state average for verbal and math combined. School wide, 75 students participated in the Advanced Placement program this year and they took a total of 166 tests. CSN, August/September 2007.

Equestrian Drill Team Earns District Medal

The Corbett High School Equestrian drill team took the bronze medal at district and competed in Redmond at the state meet. The team was awarded the 2nd place small team trophy from our district and the sportsmanship trophy. Many a night was spent hauling horses at night in the rain and cold to practice when there was arena time, but everyone was there with a smile on their face and ready to ride. CSN, August/September 2006.

2007 Symphonic Band Takes First Place

More than 3,000 high school students representing forty-nine high schools performed Wednesday through Saturday, May 9-12, at the 2007 OSAA / US Bank / Les Schwab Tires Band and Orchestra State Champions held on the Oregon State University campus. On May 10, Corbett High School, directed by Tim Killgore, received 1st place in the 2A/1A Band Division with 266 points. CSN, June/July 2007.

Corbett Has Two Concert Bands
Director Tim Kilgore writes:

Not very many 4A schools have two concert bands. No 3A schools that I know of have two concert bands. Little old Corbett (2A) does. We call them the Symphonic and Concert bands. Very of the schools that do have two concert bands, have both groups performing at a level of proficiency that would qualify them to perform at the State Competition. Well, a pessimist would say that Corbett doesn't either. But the April 11 performance by the Concert Band tells me otherwise. The combined scores by the judges left us two points shy of qualifying to go to the State Competition. In the bit picture, two points is negligible and a performance today with different judges would easily prove that. Please join me in honoring the Concert Band in their fantastic performance Wednesday April 11. They are worthy of big kudos. The Symphonic Band will be performing at the State Competition on May 10. This is the 7th year in a row that Corbett will be competing at the State level. We've always finished in the top five. CSN, May 2007.

CHS Football Player to Play in Shrine Game

Andrew Hanes has been selected to play in this year's 1A through 4A East/West Shrine Football game in Baker City on August 4th, 2007, and Travis Pardue is an alternate. Congratulations to both young men for this honor. CSN, May 2007.

Volleyball and Football Teams Go To State

The Corbett High School volleyball team placed third at State. Caitlin Spanjer and Heather Anderson, both seniors, were named to the Tournament All Star second team. The football team made it to the second round of state playoffs. Several players were named to the Northwest League All Star team, including Andrew Hanes, Kevin Greenslade, Spencer Childs, Travis Pardue, Jared Green, Andy Sommerville, J.J. Porter, Robert Calloway and Spencer Childs. CSN, December 2006.

OSAA Academic All-State Award Goes to Volleyball Team

In the fall of 2006, the OSAA announced the winners of the Academic All-State Award to the top ten 2A volleyball teams in the state. Corbett High School ranked 9th with a 3.55 GPA. CSN, November 2006.

Corbett in Top 2% of all US Public Schools

Jay Mathews, Newsweek Contributing Editor, writes regarding Corbett High School:

This is the fifth year that Newsweek has published its list of America's Best High Schools. We have always searched for small schools outside the great metropolitan areas that have produced results far above expectations. They are hard to find, given the lack of a national database with the numbers we want, so we did know about Corbett High School when we released the first version of the new list last week. But Superintendent Bob Dunton quickly contacted us with Corbett's numbers and we have just released the new list. Corbett is ranked number 573, with a very impressive ratio of 1.651 AP tests per graduating senior. This puts Corbett in the top 2 percent of all US public schools. This is a sign that Corbett's teachers, students and parents have realized the importance of challenging as many students as possible at the school, and give them a chance to get a taste of long reading lists and long final exams that demand thought and analysis. Several studies show that students who do well on AP tests in high school are more likely to graduate from college. We are sorry we didn't find Corbett sooner, but are very happy to see them on the list today, and expect to hear even more good things from the school in the future. -Jay Matthews, Newsweek Contributing Editor and Washington Post Reporter, and developer of the America's Best High Schools list. CSN, June/July 2006.

Corbett Scores High in State Rankings

Six Oregon high schools were listed among the nation's best in Newsweek's annual high school rankings. The list of 1,200 schools included South Eugene High School (No. 359), Wilsonville High School (No. 428), Corbett High School (No. 573), Beaverton High School (No. 677), Lake Oswego High School (No. 894), Westview High School (No. 1050 and Lincoln High School (No. 1062). Jay Mathews, an editor at Newsweek who develops the list, said its goal is to reflect how well high schools are preparing students for college. The rankings are based on the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or Cambridge tests divided by the number of graduating seniors. The Oregonian, May 9, 2006.

Corbett Band Hits High Note

The Corbett High School Concert Band finished in fourth place at the OSAA State Band Festival on May 11, 2006, at OSU in Corvallis in the 2A/1A Band Division. Congratulations to Mr. Killgore and our fine student musicians. Previously, the band took top honors for the fifth year in a row at this year's Northwest League music festival. CSN,June/July 2006.

Four-day Student Contact Week Works for CHS

Corbett School District operates on a four-day student contact week; usually Monday through Thursday, except when Monday is a holiday, then school is Tuesday through Friday. The only other exceptions, other than winter and spring breaks, are weeks in November when we celebrate Veterans' Day and Thanksgiving, and in June when we go an extra half day the last week of school. Unforeseen school closures from inclement weather, etc. may require a change in our calendar if we have to make up student contact days. CSN, March 2006.
